Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity
About
At Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. With the help of permanent affordable housing solutions, families embark on an immediate path to financial stability & self-reliance that transcends generations. Beyond the family unit, homeownership helps Gloucester County preserve the available workforce, often preventing families from leaving the county to seek a better life. In traditionally underinvested neighborhoods, homeownership instills long-term residents with a vested interest in maintaining, advocating for, and investing in resources/ improvements for their neighborhood.
Studies provided by Habitat for Humanity International, based on GCHFH’s data, shows homeownership is foundational to child development and growth. Homeownership lifts families from instability, stress, and fear, and encourages self-reliance and confidence.
Stable, affordable housing is a key determinant of health. The house and neighborhood where one grows up impacts the health and longevity of one s life. Having a safe, stable, affordable home also impacts a child s success in school. However, many Gloucester County residents live outside a safe, stable neighborhood as roughly 10% of the county residents live below the poverty line. That is why Gloucester County Habitat has been at work in since 1986, building houses in partnership with those in need of affordable housing. In 34 years, our organization completed 47 homes for low-income families, providing affordable housing to more than 225 family members. Homeownership is a crucial foundation for any family. By moving out of substandard housing and into a Habitat home, homeowners and their families become more likely to improve their health, attain an education, and increase their safety and personal wealth. According to a study by Habitat for Humanity International, 74% of Habitat homeowners stated that their families health had improved since moving into their homes. Prior to moving, poor living conditions proved detrimental to mental health and aggravated existing medical conditions, such as asthma.
